What are Backup Files?

Backup Files are used by backup software to store incremental as well as full system backups. Backup files are generally created automatically by backup software and can be stored in a variety of proprietary formats. On mobile devices, these files can contain a backup of text messages, calls, images, and more.

DPB — Format: Binary
The “.DPB” file format has been developed by Susteen for their DataPilot software, a software for backing up your cell phone contact information. The “.DPB” file itself is used to transfer cell phone data to the computer and can contain contacts, text messages, pictures, videos, and other mobile phone data. Moreover, this file format also supports password-protection.
TMP — Format: Unknown
This file format is a temporary file format used by backup software when backing up data. A “.TMP” file is used as a backup or a cache file and is usually deleted as soon as the program is closed. Most programs use these temporary files to temporarily hold data on your computer while you are using a specific software application.
JRS — Format: Unknown
Developed by Microsoft, files with the “.JRS” extension are transaction log files that are created by Microsoft Exchange, a mail server and calendar management server developed by Microsoft. These files are used as placeholders for a transaction and are only created when the hard disk that contains the transaction log runs out of space.
ONEPKG — Format: Unknown
Developed by Microsoft, files with the “.ONEPKG” extension are backup files created by Microsoft's OneNote, a program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration by Microsoft. The “.ONEPKG” file is a package file that can contain several OneNote files in one single archive. This package can then be used to publish and share notes with other users as well backing-up OneNote files.
