Get Password Leak Alert in Windows

Here is how you can get Alerts when your Password has been Leaked Using Microsoft Edge Browser

Long gone are the days when all your data was stored on a local machine. Now, everything is stored in the cloud, locked behind a set of credentials. While this may be amazing in terms of accessibility, allowing you to access your data anytime, from anywhere in the world using any device with a web browser, it comes at a price; security. Companies are extremely careless when trying to manage the data of their customers and every few days you hear about hackers getting access to confidential customer data and leaking it to the dark web.

For the consumer, there is not much they can do to make companies save their information securely. However, what a consumer can do is to be vigilant when keeping passwords and making sure to use different passwords for different accounts. The problem with this is that this can be too many passwords to remember.

If you like to use the same password for multiple places, you would be glad to know about a feature built inside the Microsoft Edge browser that keeps an eye out for all your passwords and alerts you as soon as it detects that your password has been leaked. Called the Password Monitor, the feature is currently still in development and you can use it via the Dev or Canary channels of the browser. Here is how you can do that,

Using Edge Password Monitor

  1. Download Microsoft Edge’s Dev Channel or Canary Channel version.
  2. Paste the following link in the address bar to go to the Passwords section in the Settings,
    edge://settings/passwords
  3. Find the settings for Show alerts when passwords are found in an online leak and switch it to On.

That’s it. It’s that simple.

However, do note that this feature will only work for the passwords that you store using the Microsoft Edge browser as it only has access to that data.
