Microsoft Corporation is a technology company based in the United States of America. An international giant, the company is spread all over the globe and is one of the most valuable companies in the world today worth over half a trillion dollars.
The company develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and services. Headquartered in Redmond, Microsoft had around 124,000 employees worldwide as of 2016. In 2017 alone, the company had a revenue of $89.95 billion.
They are best known for being the creator of Microsoft Windows which is arguably the most used PC operating system around the globe. Moreover, they have also managed to dominate the productivity market with their Microsoft Office family of software, which includes Excel, Word, Access, and many others. Some of their other popular products include Skype, a telecommunication software; Azure, a cloud-computing service; Xbox, a video game console; and SQL Server, a relational database management system.
Although a leader in personal computing, Microsoft has failed to make a sizable impact in the smartphone market. It shuttered its Windows Phone program last year, finally ending the 7-year struggle of trying to keep up with Google's Android and Apple's iOS.
Microsoft was founded by two friends, Paul Allen and Bill Gates, in 1975. Inspired by a microcomputer featured in a technology magazine, Bill and Paul decided to develop their own BASIC (a high-level programming language) interpreter and ended up getting a deal with Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems to distribute it. Thus, Microsoft was officially established on 4th April 1975, with Bill Gates in the role of a CEO.
Since then, the company has become a technological mammoth, beating industry veterans at their own game. And thanks to Microsoft's monumental rise over the years, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, both are some of the richest men in the world today with a net worth in billions of dollars.
Currently, Microsoft is led by Satya Nadella, an Indian American business executive, who succeeded Steve Ballmer in 2014. Bill Gates stepped down as the Chairman of Microsoft in 2014.
