What are Shortcut Files?

Shortcut Files allow a user to quickly access a resource or a file stored in some other location on the hard disk. Basically, a shortcut file is a link to some other file on your computer. True to its name, it allows you to save time by quickly accessing a particular item without actually having to navigate to the file directory where the item is stored.

For example, if you install a program on your hard drive, the only way to run it is to open its “.EXE” file by going to where it exists inside the folder you installed it. To save time, you can simply create a shortcut to the “.EXE” file on your desktop which points to the actual executable file.
